Don't get caught out with Biodiesel

Biodiesel is now available from some fuel stations. Unbeknown to many people, not all manufacturers' engines are suitable for this fuel - Typical examples include BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda and Seat.

Some of our customers have made the costly error of filling up their vehicle with biodiesel instead of normal diesel - when their engine is not suitable.

At garage forecourts, the biodiesel nozzle is often located next to the normal diesel nozzle. So it's an easy mistake to make.

Resulting damage will not be covered by manufacturers' warranties or a maintenance contract - so be careful when filling up.

How to identify a biodiesel pump

The biodiesel pump is identifiable because the nozzle is orange, whereas the normal diesel nozzle is black.

What is biodiesel?

The fuel is a blend of 70 per cent fossil diesel and 30 per cent biodiesel. Normal diesel contains up to five per cent biodiesel.

Biodiesel is better for the environment because it can be made from any number of natural and recycled materials. For example algae, vegetable oils, animal fats or recycled grease or cooking oil.

Because it's from a renewable source, biodiesel is readily available. It can be made on a local level and won't run out - unlike our dwindling petrol and oil supplies.

What will happen if I fill up with biodiesel?

The engine may run on biodiesel. But should a subsequent failure occur and the manufacturer has not specifically approved the use of the fuel - the warranty would almost certainly be invalidated. Maintenance contracts will also not cover the damage.

The potential bill for a replacement engine could run to several thousand pounds.

To avoid a potentially high repair cost - the general advice is that if in doubt, fill up with normal diesel and consult your vehicle handbooks or manufacturer.

Do not use biodiesel unless you specifically know that the manufacturer has approved it.
