First sight of all-new Vauxhall Astra

The brand new MkVI Vauxhall Astra features a sleek silhouette and a brand new high power/low emission engine.

The new Astra measures 4.4 metres long – the current car is 4.25m – while its wheelbase is 71mm longer than the current Astra. Vauxhall promises this will provide better passenger comfort. Combined with a new rear axle, Vauxhall is promising exceptional ride quality.

Enhancing the Astra’s dynamic performance is the option of Vauxhall’s FlexRide system. This offers drivers three unique damper settings – standard, sport and tour – while being fully adaptive to changes in driving style and cornering speed.

Power will include an all-new 1.4-litre turbocharged engine. This is similar in concept to Volkswagen’s TSI engine in the Golf. This provides high power but reduced emissions and fuel consumption – typical of much larger engines.

The 1.4T joins three further petrol engines. Power ranges from 100PS to 180PS. There will be four diesel engines: 95PS to 160PS.

Unique in this sector will be the Astra’s optional, latest generation AFL (Adaptive Forward Lighting). This features bi-xenon lighting that changes its intensity and reach to suit prevailing road conditions. A similar system was introduced on the Insignia executive class car.

Expect three-door, estate and convertible Astra models to follow.

The new Vauxhall Astra will be on sale from December 2009.
