Update 5th October 2015: Advice for members affected by the VW emissions crisis
HM Revenue and Customs has confirmed to the BVRLA that any customers affected by a potential recall of certain Volkswagen Group diesel vehicles will not have their Benefit-In-Kind tax status changed if it comes to light that the emissions for a vehicle have increased.
The news comes as the Department for Transport announced that consumers who purchased vehicles in good faith will not incur additional Vehicle Excise Duty costs. VW has made it clear that technical solutions are being developed and will be presented to responsible authorities before the end of October. The VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) details of affected cars are to be released to retailers shortly and a self-serve process for customers to check if their vehicle is affected will be set up. So far, some 4,000 VW Group vehicles have been removed from sale across the UK.
Volkswagen Emission Update
On 20th September 2015, Volkswagen AG communicated details on discrepancies in the NOX emission test results of some diesel vehicles in the US. These discrepancies have been related to the use of a defeat device in certain diesel models with indications from Volkswagen putting the total number of group vehicles impacted at 11 million.

We would like to assure you that we are working very closely with all the key parties to confirm facts regarding the vehicles impacted by this situation so that we can then provide you with the necessary guidance for both your fleet and your individual customers.
It is important to note Volkswagen's statement that new Euro 6 diesel engines are not affected by this issue including the current Golf, Passat and other models.
Regulators have stated they expect Volkswagen AG to share a full plan by October 7th 2015 at the latest and we expect further clarification on UK models impacted over the coming days.
As soon as we have this information or additional detail, we will communicate further on expected impact and the path to resolution.
